A Brief History of the Screen Actors Workshop

The Screen Actors Workshop was established in 1988 (and was formerly known as The Film and TV Academy.) The acting school was founded by actor/director Alan Nurthen, in a concerted effort to demystify the staid academic approach to on-camera actor training. For more than 20 years, Alan's concise easy-to-grasp approach to theory, in conjunction with solid practical sessions and his nurturing teaching style, have earned him the reputation as one of Sydney's leading screen acting tutors.

His students have successfully established long-term careers both in front of and behind the cameras. Many are established film and television actors, while others are working in theatre, radio and as television presenters, camera operators, sound recordists, writers, producers, directors and filmmakers.

Former production students of Alan's have won some of Sydney's most prestigious film and video festivals, including The Short Black Film Festival and Tropfest.
