Cold reading can be a nightmare for actors as there is no effective way that you can prepare for a cold read.

The typical scenario is, you turn up at the audition and you are given a scene to perform. You then have no more than a couple of minutes to get the gist of the scene and role and then you are in front of the camera. This is where focus becomes vitally important. Focus on the key points in the scene and play off those key points when performing. Hold the script up close to the left or right side of your face so that when looking at the lines and then back to the camera you can maintain the rhythm and pace of the scene. If you hold the scene down near your waist then the time it takes to glance at it is longer and the performance will be full of awkward pauses.

These are just a couple of handy tips for performing a cold read.

At the Screen Actors Workshop we run an intensive 6 hour Cold Reading Techniques masterclass with actor/tutor Salvatore Coco which will prepare you for these types of auditions. Knowledge is power. And power and confidence will help you to win those all important roles.

There are now quite a few full-time acting courses avaliable in Sydney, the vast majority being theatre-based training.
At the Screen Actors Workshop we run a very comprehensive and successful 20 Week Full-Time Intensive Showreel Course, which over 420 hours of face-to-face tuition, trains aspiring actors to a fully professional level.
But how can we do this in only five months? Quite simply, by concentrating on the cutting-edge screen performance techniques used by working actors on a day-to-day basis; thereby not overloading the course with drama, theatre training or useless mumbo jumbo.
Students who have completed the course have joined the lucky 2% of working actors on television, film and emerging new media.
As much as we specialise in training for the screen only, it’s worthwhile for any aspiring actor to gain comprehensive training for the theatre as well. If you can act on-camera and on-stage then you are more likely to maintain a steady flow of work when one area dries up for a while.
No related posts.

Physical performance and non-verbal communication skills are areas where many actors need additional training. When reacting non-verbally to stimuli many actors resort to acting and over-emoting, as opposed to reacting truthfully to the stimuli in a simple but effective way. Anyone can learn and play dialogue to a greater or lesser extent, but it takes additional skills to understand stage directions/actions and then bring them to life in a creative and meaningful way within the context of the scene. For a screen actor, action (doing things/creating “business) comprises on average two-thirds of most scenes: and the talent is revealed in how well those tasks are handled, and how the things that a person does can exponentially give greater insight into the person performing those tasks. At the Screen Actors Workshop this an area of training that we are paying greater attention to as we’ve noticed that many actors are lacking in these vital skills.

Some acting teachers resort to teaching mumbo jumbo: academic waffle with no real application or logical outcome for professional on-camera performance. One of my students told me recently that she had learned this “amazing technique” in an intensive acting course. Valuable time was wasted teaching the students to cry out of one eye only! Why? It’s a mystery to me. When you cry, you cry. Was it an effort to save tears for camera set-ups from both sides of the face? Who knows? But I do know that when my mother died my wife, my children and I cried almost non-stop for a week. And we didn’t run out of tears. Your time spent studying in an acting class should be time spent learning valuable and meaningful methods and techniques; not useless mumbo jumbo. To this end, I can highly recommend that you read one of the best books available on screen acting: Acting for the Camera by Tony Barr. Tony’s book was written over twenty years ago but is still completely relevant to modern day screen performance. It covers the important areas of screen acting craft with no waffle or useless mumbo jumbo. If you want to know what is required for no bullshit cutting edge screen performance then this book is a must read!

We have a huge night of entertainment planned, including scene snippets and bloopers from 1988 to 2013, and two live sets from former student Sarah Lorien’s band, the fabulous Aqualash. Aqualash are on a high at the moment with one of their songs Never Say Surrender selected for the soundtrack of horror film The Revenant.
TERM 2 MASTERCLASS PROGRAM

Next up on the Masterclass Program is one of our new courses for 2013, Cold Reading Techniques tutored by actor/MC/presenter Salvatore Coco (Two Hands; Looking for Alibrandi; Underbelly 3; Sea Patrol Series 4.) Some of our top advanced students have requested a course on cold reading, as cold reads at drama auditions can be a potential minefield, and many talented actors miss out on plum roles simply because they fail to understand the process and the techniques involved. This intensive one day course involves comprehensive on-camera performance coupled with insightfull assessment. The workshop will cover all you need to know to blitz your way through cold reads and win the role. (For further information refer to course flier attached to your April-May newsletter link email)

Also slated for Term 2 is the hugely popular Armoury for Actors Masterclass. This full day course, held at The Botany Pistol Club with tutor/armourer Tony Garland (Superman Returns; Underbelly Razor) is literally a blast and teaches students everything there is to know about the safety, handling and discharge of firearms in the context of credible on-set action performance. (For further information refer to course flier attached to your April-May newsletter link email)

Congratulations to 9 year-old Junior student Maya Beck who has been working hard in class and seeing the result pay off handsomely with a lead speaking role in the Polly Pocket TVC screening on the Foxtel kids channel Nickelodeon. Maya has also recently completed work on a music video for the band Khanz, where she struts her stuff as a dancer. Well done Maya!

12 year-old Junior student Zach Zitis has been no slouch either, currently gracing our television screens in a Smith Family TVC. Zach is featured 100% in the commercial as he delivers a moving piece to camera.

And while on the subject of our Junior students, it was heartening to see the noticable improvement in confidence and presentation from our two newest students, Antonio Nardo (7) and Eden Thomas (8) With only a couple of on-camera class scenes to their credit thus far, Eden and Antonio are becoming relaxed and supremely confident in front of the camera, displaying a great sense of fun in their most recent work. Well done Antonio and Eden!

Performing in your underwear seems to be the current trend amongst our advanced adult students with Sam Smith recently performing in the play Jilted in his underdaks. Not to be outdone, classmate Tim Page is currently featured 100% in a new Bonds Flexits TVC with former tennis ace Pat Rafter; and, you guessed it, strips down to his Bonds undies along with the rest of the “film crew.” The TVC is a hoot and Tim knocks his role as Pat’s manager out of the park. What’s next guys? Full frontal? Please, no!!!

After numerous rewrites and some serious polishing, Hugh Cann’s Canny Productions satirical television pilot, Agency, has won the support of veteran producer Bill Hughes (Packed to the Rafters.) With Bill’s blessing and encouragement, Hugh is in the process of submitting the pilot episode to ABC-TV for their consideration. This is potentially good news for our students, as the supporting roles, 50 worders and featured extra spots available in Agency will be cast exclusively through the school. The Screen Actors Workshop studio also features as one of the locations in Agency. Stay tuned for more news as it comes to hand.

I have to agree with the illustrious Mr Penn, but below are some exceptions to the rule of mediocrity which are now available in your local video store…

Argo (USA: 2012) Director Ben Affleck. Starring Ben Affleck (The Town), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Alan Arkin (Catch 22; Little Miss Sunshine) and John Goodman (Treme) Winner of three 2013 Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing; Argo is a brilliant edge-of-the-seat thriller based on a true story about the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979-80. In lesser hands this film could have been nothing more than a one-dimensional gung-ho flag waving bore, but with a brilliant screenplay by Chris Terrio, spot on direction by Affleck and, with George Clooney as one of the producers, quality cinema is guaranteed. You’ll also get a laugh from the cynical one-liners directed at the Hollywood film industry, which are masterfully delivered with wit and relish by Goodman and Arkin. Five out of five for this superb film!

The Master (USA: 2012) Director Paul Thomas Anderson. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams. Damaged World War 2 navy veteran (Phoenix) finds salvation of sorts with the leader of The Cause (Hoffman) only to be ultimately disillusioned by the strange cult (shades of Scientology are evident.) Joaquin Phoenix’s towering performance in this rather strange film is a masterclass in physical performance and body language.

The Lost Boys (USA: 1987) Director Joel Schumacher. Starring Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Haim and Dianne Wiest. Excellent teen horror film which set the benchmark for the flood of teen vampire flicks to follow.

Sirens (Aust: 1994) Director John Duigan. Starring Sam Neill, Hugh Grant, Tara Fitzgerald, Elle Macpherson and Kate Fischer. Loosely based on the great Australian artist Norman Lindsey (played by Neill) and his plans to exhibit a new painting that the Anglican church have deemed to be a blasphemy. Hugh Grant is well cast as the young priest sent from Sydney to Lindsay’s idyllic rural retreat in Springwood to educate the artist on the “error of his ways.” The tension between the church’s teaching and the sensual side of life comes to a head when Estella, the priests wife, is slowly seduced by the libertine lifestyle.

Term 1 was a challenging and productive term which saw students from all age groups and levels tackle some difficult scene work, with varying degrees of success. Comedy scenes are particularly difficult to play and a cleverly written two-hander scene from the school’s archives rehearsed and recorded during Term 1, proved the point; highlighted by the following story… As an old actor lay on his death bed, a fan from the nursing staff asked if he was afraid of dying. The old man laughed and said, ”Dying is easy. Comedy is hard.” Sound advice indeed.

July 2013 marks the 25th anniversary of our actor training facility and we will certainly be celebrating in style!
And while on the subject of exciting news, the Screen Actors Workshop has been nominated as an Outstanding Educational Service finalist in the 2013 Australian Small Business Champion Awards. On the strength of our two wins in three years at the local small business awards, we were nominated for the Australian awards by the selection committee. Needless to say, we are thrilled to be selected as a national finalist for this prestigious award. The awards ceremony takes place in The Grand Ballroom of The Westin Hotel in Sydney on Saturday April 13. We’ll let you know how we fared in the May-June Newsletter.
Due to the school’s sponsorship and involvement with the annual 24/7 Youth Film Festival, I was asked by Warringah council to be the professional film industry judge for the 8 finalist films in the innaugural Untold Stories documentary competition; which I was more than happy to be involved with. The Untold Stories project is a competition for budding filmmakers aged from 12 to 24 years and involves the archiving of life stories from selected Warringah shire senior citizens. The standard of the films ranged from average to exceptional. The winning Seniors team (18 to 24 years) and the recipients of the $1,000.00 first prize were Veronica and Sofia Szterenyiova for their film Verso Sisters. The second prize of $300.00 went to Michael Perry for his film Shirley Allbright’s Story. First place in the Juniors category and the $1,000.00 prize went to Harri Gilbert and Mathew Hoff for their brilliantly produced film Pamela’s Story. The cinematography and editing on Pamela’s Story was truly outstanding and Harri and Mathew are names to keep an eye out for. Second in the Juniors and the prize of $300.00 went to Tom Unger for his film Theresa’s Journey from Hungary.

The Ask the Agent masterclass held on Sunday March 24 with tutor Roxann Husband was a very interesting and informative workshop. The attending students Paul Millett, Shannon Donaghey, Oscar Lin, Meredith Cox, Greg Newnham and Jodie Campbell gained valuable insight into discovering how to brand themselves, succeed at auditions, and sustain a long-term acting career.
The Jungle, the third film in director Andrew Traucki’s Three Colours Red trilogy (Blackwater; The Reef; The Jungle) premiered March 8 to an enthusiastic (and very scared!) audience at Fox Studios in Sydney. Andrew has proven to be an exceptionally skilled director within the horror genre and The Jungle is highly recommended for the many fans of his previous two films. Actor Agoes Soedjarwo’s wife Julie was so scared that she had to leave the cinema half way through the film! Whether her exit was from fear alone, or whether Julie couldn’t bear to see the fate awaiting her husband’s character, I couldn’t say for sure.

Hollywood’s energy drink of choice, Mona Vie, has proved popular at the studio with two cases of cans sold in the past term. We were initially selling Mona Vie for $6.00 a can but due to the health drink company’s success with the Hollywood fraternity, Mona Vie Australia has kindly reduced the wholesale price to the studio – which now allows us to retail the healthy energy drink for $5.00 a can. The students who are already drinking Mona Vie are impressed with the natural boost in energy, focus and concentration that the drink supplies. In fact Mona Vie’s acai blend has all of the benefits of drinks such as Red Bull but with the added benefit of containing no chemicals or sugar. Try a can next time you’re in class.
2013 MASTERCLASS PROGRAM

The advanced adult Neo-Noir film acting masterclass was the first of the new courses added to the program for 2013. A small select group of students were invited to attend, with two students slated for each role on a first-come-first-served basis. The students who completed the course – Tony Dreise, Sonya Plummer and Paul Millett - learned a great deal about the importance of physical performance and non-verbal communication. The course produced the short film Bullet with Butterfly Wings, which is summed up neatly in the film’s logline: “A gangster’s girlfriend want out. But you can’t run from who you are or what you know.” Tony, Sonya and Paul were an ideal cast for the film: each turning in solid performances and noticably increasing their screen acting technique. For a storyboard layout of production stills from Bullet with Butterfly Wings please refer to the Photo Gallery page.

CLASSIC FILMS ON DVD

One of the many good things about being an actor is the cool homework. Every actor worth their salt studies quality films from every era of cinema in an effort to broaden their knowledge. Below are a small selection of films that are well worth tracking down…

The Gods Must be Crazy (PG) (1980 South Africa) Director Jamie Uys. Starring N!xau.

Kalahari Bushman Xi and his tribe have no knowledge of the world beyond. They are living well off the land and the gods have provided everything they need: until one day a glass Coca Cola bottle is thrown from the window of a small plane and lands unbroken amongst them. However, unlike everything they have had before, there is only one bottle to go around. This exposes the tribe to a hitherto unknown phenomonen, property, and they soon find themselves experiencing feelings and emotions they have never known before. Xi then sets off alone on a quest to find the edge of the world so he can throw away the bottle and dispose of the evil thing forever. On his travels he encounters Western Civilization for the first time. The film is a funny, poignant moral tale and was a huge international hit in the early 1980s. Well worth seeing!

The Third Man (MA) (1949 UK) Director Carol Reed. Starring Joseph Cotton, Orson Welles and Trevor Howard.

Classic British noir film remembered for its atmospheric cinematography, performances and musical score. The final shot of the film – shot in real time with no jump cuts or dissolves – influenced filmmakers worldwide and is a nod to Italian neo-realist cinema.

Rabbit Proof Fence (PG) (2002 Aust.) Director Phillip Noyce. Starring Everlyn Sampi, Kenneth Branagh and David Gulpilil.

The film, based on a true story from The Stolen Generation years, traces the journey of three young Aboriginal girls stolen from their tribe by white authorities in 1931 as they escape the Moore River Native Settlement in Western Australia and follow the rabbit proof fence for 9 weeks and 2,400 kilometers; while being pursued by a white authority figure and a black tracker. Along with Dead Calm (1989) this is one of Noyce’s great directorial achievements.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (PG) (1993 USA) Director Lasse Hallstrom. Starring Johnny Depp, Juliette Lewis and Leonardo DeCaprio.

A fantastic experience for the entire family, and the film which launched DeCaprio’s international acting career. DeCaprio plays Leo, Depp’s mentally retarded younger brother, and he knocks the role out of the park!

Little Big Man (M) (1970 USA) Director Arthur Penn. Starring Dustin Hoffman, Chief Dan George, Faye Dunaway and Martin Balsam.

Quite simply one of the best westerns ever made. A satiric comic tragedy which sees 102 year-old Jack Crab (Hoffman) relate his amazing life story from his deathbed - from child kidnap victim of the Cheyenne indians and subsequent acceptance as a full member of the tribe (leading to Crab being the only white survivor at the battle of Little Big Horn: Custer’s Last Stand.) This is one of the very few American films to portray the indians in a positive light as the true guardians of the west. But these events are only a small part of Crab’s fascinating and sprawling life story. If you haven’t seen this film, then rest assured, it will blow your mind!

Nominated for 10 Academy Awards and winner of 7, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. A fabulous caper film set in 1936 involving two grifters (Newman and Redford) who set out to con a mob boss (Shaw.) A wonderfully plotted and constructed film – and a must-see!

CLASS SCENE DVDs

Producer Hugh Cann from Canny Productions is in the process of putting together a pilot for his projected multi-platform series Agency. The 13 part series is a satire about a fictitious Sydney casting agency which is loosely based around Hugh’s experience with his late mother June’s premier A-List actors agency the June Cann Agency. Hugh will primarily be casting students from the school for roles in the Agency pilot and some initial test scenes will be shot early 2013. Hugh has some innovative ideas for the multi-platform marketing strategy for the series and the Screen Actors Workshop is thrilled to be associated with the project. Stay tuned!

2012 MASTERCLASS PROGRAM REVIEW

The school’s Masterclass Program presented a wide range of short courses during 2012, not the least of which was the Film Acting Techniques masterclass which by popular demand was held twice during the year, in January and again in July.
Every actor and aspiring performer needs a show reel. Show reels are a quick and easy way of showing agents, casting directors and directors how good a performer you are. And with YouTube now a major viewing platform you can get international exposure via the site.

What is a good show reel? At the end of the day it all comes down to your performance. Whiz bang effects and transitions are fine and dandy but you don’t want them to overshadow the most important element of your show reel – the performance. A show reel must show you at your best.

If you are just starting out in the industry then a simple one scene reel will be adequate. Casting directors and agents are pushed for time and they don’t want to watch something from a newcomer that rambles on and on. Therefore a dynamic two minute reel is all you need at this stage of your career.

For established performers, a four to five minute compilation of professional work is acceptable.

How much will a show reel cost? Prices can vary widely – from around $200-00 to $250-00 for a simple but effective one-scene reel, to over $1000-00 for a full blown extravaganza. But once again, it’s not about effects-driven flash and dazzle, but about you as a performer and how good you are.

A professionally filmed and edited scene with a strong performance is all you need as a newcomer.

Our team of industry professionals at the Screen Actors Workshop have been producing show reels, demo scenes and Audition scenes for aspiring performers and professional actors for over 20 years with proven results.
