Many actors and acting students are taking a proactive approach to their careers and producing their own online programs.
Online programming is the programming of the future as more and more people turn away from the reality show drivel on television networks and spend their viewing time watching YouTube and streaming services like Stan and Netflix.
Very few young people watch television these days, preferring instead to search online for their entertainment.
As a producer-director who has had some success with program pre-sales to television networks and who has experienced the frustration and disappointment of presenting interesting and challenging programs only to have them rejected, I’ve now moved into online production. It is far easier to produce programs and post them to YouTube than dealing with the non creative suits at the networks.
So if you are a producer with great program ideas then produce the product and post it online. It will save you the heartache of dealing with the networks who, like print advertising, are dead in the water.
You will make a better return on your investment online via crowdfunding the project and then monetising it. And if your program attracts a large enough audience then you can always pitch it to one of the more progressive networks such as SBS or ABC-TV.
As the writer-producer-director of a smash hit documentary screened on the 7 Network along with over 50 international sales worldwide in the early 2000’s, I saw my returns bled dry by Beyond Distribution and all of the other non creative hangers on to the point where I made very little from the program and from four years of hard work.
To avoid these problems and the leeches who will suck you dry, post and promote your programs online, as that is where the future of programming lies and where the action is.
