There are well over a dozen film and television casting consultants in Sydney.
These agencies specialize in either feature film casting, television drama casting or casting for television commercials; in many cases, all three.
As an aspiring professional actor, you must establish a relationship with as many casting directors as possible if you hope to sustain a long term career. However, before you attend your first casting session, it is highly recommended that you prepare for it by completing a screen test master class.
The Screen Actors Workshop run a highly informative Audition Process master class. Over the past 8 years some of Sydney’s leading casting directors have tutored the course – namely Shauna Wolifson (Mullinars Casting Consultants) and Sascha Huckstepp (Sascha Huckstepp Casting), along with current course tutor Kari Harris (Kari Harris Casting: Chopper, MI2, The Interview) If you are a novice to the casting process, or even if you have a few auditions under your belt, participating in the course is a golden opportunity to meet and to work with a principal casting director. Educational gold and the chance to make a valuable contact into the bargain!
The Audition Process master class runs over two consecutive sessions.
Session 1 (Theory and Protocol) explains what is expected of you at a casting, and most importantly, what to do and what not to do.
Session 2 (Practical) is a realistic simulated screen test, followed by an assessment of your work which exposes your strengths and weaknesses; thereby allowing you to independently polish your presentation and technique.
Students who have attended this course in the past, and then worked on improving their audition skills have gone on to win a variety of lucrative acting roles in feature films, television drama series and TV commercials.
Knowledge is power and any aspiring actor who attends their first casting session without prior knowledge of what to do and what not to do, will regret having not taken the time to fully understand the process.
