July-August 2013 Newsletter

Classes return for Term 3 from Tuesday 16 July; with the Intermediate/Advanced Extension class commencing Monday 22 July.

To get you back in the groove for classes this week, here are some words of wisdom from two of the greats of the screen trade…

Jack-Nicholson-QUotes“The minute that you’re not learning I believe you’re dead.”– Jack Nicholson
Meryl Streep“Acting is not about being someone different. It’s finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there.” – Meryl Streep
SCREEN ACTORS WORKSHOP 25th ANNIVERSARY PARTY

Saturday July 6 was a fine and mild winter’s evening, a perfect night to celebrate the school’s 25th year. Tasty music was supplied by Aqualash, there was plenty of food and refreshments to go around and the Special Celebration DVD went down a treat. The Lucky Door Prize was deservingly won by advanced adult student Paul Millett and a fun time was had by all. Now it’s onward and upward and into the next 25 years!

NORTHERN BEACHES LOCAL BUSINESS AWARDS

The 2013 awards at the Miramare Gardens Function Centre at Terrey Hills on Wednesday 3 July was a big night for local business finalists with outstanding entertainment, great food and a very upbeat atmosphere. It was also a good networking opportunity with numerous local, state and national politicians in attendance. A perfect opportunity to promote local arts and education to the political movers and shakers.

To get you thinking about the all important audition process, here’s a tip from a Hollywood casting agent on branding

STUDENT NEWS

Congratulations to advanced student Sam Smith who appears to be in half-a-dozen different TVCs and promos at the moment. Sam is currently appearing in the Big Brother Twist promo (where he proposes to his girlfriend, only to have her leap to her feet and start dancing the twist.) Sam is also producing a short film called STEW and the Facebook page he and his team have set up to promote the film is well worth a look.

It’s been hard enough keeping track of Sam’s television appearances, but it’s been virtually impossible keeping up with junior student Maya Beck’s escalating career. Well done the both of you – and well done to our other students for their recent successes!

CLASSIC FILMS ON DVD
Sexy_beast_ver1Sexy Beast (UK-Spain: 2000) Directed by Jonathan Glazer and starring Ray Winstone, Amanda Redman, Ben Kingsley and Ian McShane. Well deserved Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination for Kingsley. Sexy Beast is a gritty heist film with elements of surrealism and strong performances from a dream cast. In 2004 Total Film magazine rated Sexy Beast the 15th greatest British film of all time. Have to say I agree, and the opening sequence by the pool will make you a convert too!
Little_miss_sunshine_posterLittle Miss Sunshine (USA: 2006) Directed by the husband-wife team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and starring Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, Toni Colette, Abigail Breslin, Paul Dano and Alan Arkin. Hugely popular multi-award winning film – including 2 Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay – Little Miss Sunshine is a not-to-be-missed treat for all the family.
Four LionsFour Lions (UK: 2010) Directed by Chris Morris and starring Riz Ahmed, Kayvan Novak and Nigel Lindsay. A dark comedy Jihadi satire following a group of bumbling home-grown would-be terrorists. Highly recommended!
CLASS SCENE DVDs

If you’d like your past terms on-camera scenes edited to DVD then see me in class and I’ll organise it for you. Class scene DVDs are $40-00 per term’s work or the same price for a 5 scene compilation of your best scenes. Excellent value as further home study is guaranteed to fast track your skills!

I’m looking forward to working with our established students again this week; and the staff and I would also like to welcome the new students commencing classes with us this term. It’s going to be a fun and dynamic 10 weeks of classes!

Wooden Acting

When an actor’s performance is described as “wooden,” what does that mean? Basically it means that the performance is forced, in other words, the feelings and emotions are “acted,” not felt. Good acting is living in the moment and truthfully experiencing what the character is feeling emotionally from moment to moment. Wooden acting can be […]

Finding the right acting tutor

The first step in commencing your budding acting career is to find the right acting school and, most importantly, the right acting teacher for you. If you want to learn stage acting then you have a wide choice of institutions. If you want to study screen acting, the choices are limited. But the most critical […]

Truthful Acting

Truthful acting means just that. It means don’t ACT for the camera but instead have an experience! Feel what the character is feeling from moment to moment and immerse yourself fully into the role. The camera is a great bullshit detector and if you’re “acting” then the camera will immediately read the performance as phony […]

Commitment

It’s one thing to apply for a full-time acting course after completing high school when you have plenty of free time and access to resources such as Hex, Austudy or Abstudy. But what if you’re a mature age student? How can you learn how to act while juggling a full-time job and family commitments? If […]

Learning Lines

Whether for stage or screen you must  learn your lines. There is no excuse. As veteran British actor Bill Nighy says: “You must know your lines inside out and back to front.” If you don’t know your lines then you are not connected to either the moment or to the other actor(s). There are numerous techniques […]
