July-August 2018 Newsletter

Want to become a better actor? Or want to dramatically improve social interactions? The key  is  listening.

During an interview Clint Eastwood  was asked; “What’s the most important thing an actor needs to have?” To which Eastwood immediately replied: “The ability to listen.”

The better you listen the more  truthful your reactions to the stimuli.

It’s been a fun and productive  first term  in the new studio space. We were pleased when our established students  gave the new studio a big thumbs up when classes commenced this term.

The new students who commenced classes this term have worked hard, enjoyed themselves, learned some valuable lessons and turned in some good work.

The advanced teen and adult  students on many occasions pulled off some outstanding performances.

Keep up the good work. You make me proud to be your tutor.

Term Dates

Term 2 classes complete week ending Saturday 30 June.

Term 3 classes return from Tuesday 17 July to Saturday 21 July.

It would be greatly appreciated if all students returning for Term 3 post a $50.00 fee deposit as we are still recovering financially from the short notice move to the new Level 2 studios.

American Accents and Dialects Master Class

With longtime former voice tutor Bill Pepper in semi retirement we’ve added new accents coach Simon Masterton to the teaching staff.

Born in Scotland Simon trained at Cambridge University and when he moved to Australia he graduated with an MFA in Voice from NIDA.

Simon is known for his good humour, specificity and rigour in teaching voice and dialects to actors and business people alike.

Student News

Keep an eye out for the Sydney premiere of  advanced adult student Logan Webster’s  new feature Remember Redfield.

The psychological thriller-come-murder-mystery features some of Logan’s former classmates including Mona Bagherpour and Ali Woodall.

Well done to all involved!

Class Scene DVD’s/USB’s

If you would like an edited DVD or USB of this term’s scenes, or scenes from previous terms, then see me in class or email me and I’ll organize it for you. Class scene DVD’s/USB’s are an excellent means of further improving your work via further home study – and with an editing fee of only $50.00 per term’s scenes they’re a good value educational investment.

Featured class scene An oldie but a goodie from 2014,  Stray Condom starring Logan Webster and Ali Woodall. (Note: Scene features adult themes)

Have a fun and productive two-week semester break and I look forward to working with you again when Term 3 classes return from Tuesday 17 July.

Wooden Acting

When an actor’s performance is described as “wooden,” what does that mean? Basically it means that the performance is forced, in other words, the feelings and emotions are “acted,” not felt. Good acting is living in the moment and truthfully experiencing what the character is feeling emotionally from moment to moment. Wooden acting can be […]

Finding the right acting tutor

The first step in commencing your budding acting career is to find the right acting school and, most importantly, the right acting teacher for you. If you want to learn stage acting then you have a wide choice of institutions. If you want to study screen acting, the choices are limited. But the most critical […]

Truthful Acting

Truthful acting means just that. It means don’t ACT for the camera but instead have an experience! Feel what the character is feeling from moment to moment and immerse yourself fully into the role. The camera is a great bullshit detector and if you’re “acting” then the camera will immediately read the performance as phony […]

Commitment

It’s one thing to apply for a full-time acting course after completing high school when you have plenty of free time and access to resources such as Hex, Austudy or Abstudy. But what if you’re a mature age student? How can you learn how to act while juggling a full-time job and family commitments? If […]

Learning Lines

Whether for stage or screen you must  learn your lines. There is no excuse. As veteran British actor Bill Nighy says: “You must know your lines inside out and back to front.” If you don’t know your lines then you are not connected to either the moment or to the other actor(s). There are numerous techniques […]
