May-June 2018 Newsletter

To open the May-June newsletter some wise words from the  sadly missed Robin Williams…

Kids, teens and adult classes return from Tuesday 24 April through to Saturday 28 April –  and I’m looking forward to working  with you  in our  new top floor (Level 2) studios.

The main entrance is via the double glass doors at the northern end of the building…

The new street level front entrance (pictured above) next to Body Board King takes you up the stairs past the dance studio to Level 2 on the top floor – and to the studio front door (pictured below)

… or conversely, you can take the back stairs (near the rear of our old downstairs studio) to the top floor and enter via the back door and along the corridor

It was sad moving out of our old downstairs studios after 15 years but it’s also exciting to have a new space to work in.

The above Denzil Washington quote perfectly sums up all the hard work and the motivation behind the big move

From  our original studio in Dee Why West, where we spent the first 15 years from 1988 to 2003;  and then another 15 years  from  2003 to 2018 in our downstairs  main road studio at  722 Pittwater Road Brookvale –  well, that’s a  phenomenal period  of time and history  nestled  in the school’s  archives.

Over the past 15 years  in our old downstairs studios we have held well over 3,500 classes and courses – that’s a lot of fun and madness  over the years folks!

An historic moment: The final class in the old studios, the Saturday Teens on 7 April. (L to R Charlie, Claire, Emily, Lily-Ann, Sarah, Clare and Nathan.) Ethan and Luca were away for the final class of Term 1 –  sorry you missed the photo op boys!

And while we’re on the never ending subject of the move, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thanks to graduate students Tony Dreise and Paul Millett along with  advanced students Simon Busuttil and Lakshay Dhiman for helping to move all of the heavy furniture upstairs on 8 April. Your  invaluable assistance and your loyalty to the school is appreciated more than I can say fellas. Well done!

A grateful thank you  is also due to Daria Williams  the mother of one of our new Junior students who pitched in on day 2 of the 3 day move.

To wrap up the newsletter, I’d like to welcome our established students back for another 10 week term of screen acting classes along with extending a warm welcome  to the  new students  commencing classes with us this term.

I look forward to working with you when classes return  in late April.

Wooden Acting

When an actor’s performance is described as “wooden,” what does that mean? Basically it means that the performance is forced, in other words, the feelings and emotions are “acted,” not felt. Good acting is living in the moment and truthfully experiencing what the character is feeling emotionally from moment to moment. Wooden acting can be […]

Finding the right acting tutor

The first step in commencing your budding acting career is to find the right acting school and, most importantly, the right acting teacher for you. If you want to learn stage acting then you have a wide choice of institutions. If you want to study screen acting, the choices are limited. But the most critical […]

Truthful Acting

Truthful acting means just that. It means don’t ACT for the camera but instead have an experience! Feel what the character is feeling from moment to moment and immerse yourself fully into the role. The camera is a great bullshit detector and if you’re “acting” then the camera will immediately read the performance as phony […]

Commitment

It’s one thing to apply for a full-time acting course after completing high school when you have plenty of free time and access to resources such as Hex, Austudy or Abstudy. But what if you’re a mature age student? How can you learn how to act while juggling a full-time job and family commitments? If […]

Learning Lines

Whether for stage or screen you must  learn your lines. There is no excuse. As veteran British actor Bill Nighy says: “You must know your lines inside out and back to front.” If you don’t know your lines then you are not connected to either the moment or to the other actor(s). There are numerous techniques […]
