Children’s Film Acting Workshop

The October workshop is fully booked and I’m looking forward to working with the course participants on the 5th, 6th and  7th of October. The kids and I have a great script to work from and it should be a lot of fun for all involved.

The next children’s film acting workshop will take place in the January school holidays.

See the Kids Holiday Film Acting Workshops  page in the Classes and Courses menu for further information on the January 2017 workshop.

Book the Role Master Class

At time of writing there is only one position still available in the Book the Role intensive with award-winning actor and director Peter Phelps. The course takes place over a full Sunday on 30 October and will teach you everything you need to know about how to successfully book roles in film and TV productions.

SF3 Smart Phone Film Festival

The dynamic duo of Ali Crew and Angela Blake – founders of SF3 – capitalized on last year’s inaugural festival, thereby making SF3  2016  a resounding success. This was  due in no small part to Ali and Angela’s passion for filmmaking, and their dedication to promoting emerging talent – both in front of, and behind, the camera.

Winner of the Best Actor award  at SF3 2016 was Surry Hills lad Liam J Phelan  who joins the Thursday advanced adult class this coming term, along with last year’s 24/7 Youth Film Festival Best Actress award winner Laura Bradford. Well done to the both of you and I look forward to working with you this term.

Christmas Party

The Screen Actors Workshop Christmas party will be held at the school’s studios on Saturday 26 November from 7-30 pm. All students, family,  friends and associates  are welcome, and we hope to see as many of you on the night as possible. It’s been a very productive year and we have many successes to celebrate! Be there or be square, as the saying goes.

Student News

Sabeena Manalis, now living and working in Melbourne, is about to stir up  trouble on  Neighbors  playing  the  role of  Regan.

Well done Sabeena. Give ’em heaps!

Class Scene DVDs

If you would like an edited DVD of your past term’s work then see me in class or email me and I will organize it for you.

Class scene DVDs are $50-00 per terms on-camera workshops, or the same price for a compilation of your favourite five scenes from current or previous terms work.

Class scene DVDs are an excellent  way to  improve your performance skills via further home study. They also make for a great keepsake.

Check out this scene from the Saturday Teen class recorded  last term…

And speaking of further home study, if you’re keen to improve your performance skills, then check out the Blogs  pages on our web site, along with the Films on DVD  section in our Newsletters Archive for a wide range of quality films and television series. Or type actors on acting into the YouTube search bar for a wealth of information.

To wrap up the newsletter, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the new students commencing classes with us this term, and to welcome back our established students for another 10 week term of screen acting tuition.

Wooden Acting

When an actor’s performance is described as “wooden,” what does that mean? Basically it means that the performance is forced, in other words, the feelings and emotions are “acted,” not felt. Good acting is living in the moment and truthfully experiencing what the character is feeling emotionally from moment to moment. Wooden acting can be […]

Finding the right acting tutor

The first step in commencing your budding acting career is to find the right acting school and, most importantly, the right acting teacher for you. If you want to learn stage acting then you have a wide choice of institutions. If you want to study screen acting, the choices are limited. But the most critical […]

Truthful Acting

Truthful acting means just that. It means don’t ACT for the camera but instead have an experience! Feel what the character is feeling from moment to moment and immerse yourself fully into the role. The camera is a great bullshit detector and if you’re “acting” then the camera will immediately read the performance as phony […]

Commitment

It’s one thing to apply for a full-time acting course after completing high school when you have plenty of free time and access to resources such as Hex, Austudy or Abstudy. But what if you’re a mature age student? How can you learn how to act while juggling a full-time job and family commitments? If […]

Learning Lines

Whether for stage or screen you must  learn your lines. There is no excuse. As veteran British actor Bill Nighy says: “You must know your lines inside out and back to front.” If you don’t know your lines then you are not connected to either the moment or to the other actor(s). There are numerous techniques […]
