Storytelling: December 2020 – January 2021

What a year it’s been!

Until the lock-down in April – with over 30 years of continuous classes under our belt – we’d never had to close the school before.

And during these fearful times I’m happy to report that there were no health problems during Term’s 1, 3 and 4 (Term 2 was the 14 week lock-down.)

A sign I hope for the rest of the city, which seems to be slowly recovering at the moment, along with a resurgence in the Arts.

Actors are storytellers – the oldest tradition passed from person to person – and the below quote should inspire us to keep moving forward creatively in these strange and puzzling times…

Author Robert McKell

Term Dates

Term 4, 2020 completes Week Ending Saturday December 12.

Term 1, 2021 classes return from Week Commencing Tuesday 2nd through to Saturday 6th February, 2021.

Studio Christmas Party

We’ve had some good Christmas parties over the years, but the party on Saturday November 28 was right up there with the best of them.

Mork in party mode

Unfortunately Mork the cat couldn’t make it as she had a previous engagement, but thanks again to the students and friends who did attend on the night.

We partied from 7 pm until well after 1 am. A fun and lively party and the Bloopers Reel went down a treat. Couldn’t have asked for more.

2020 Wrap Up

Despite all of the challenges we faced this year, our students have managed to confront the obstacles and prevail.

During the very dry year of 2020 for the film and television industry, we’ve managed to have success with our past and present  students performing leads in feature films, critically-acclaimed television series and numerous TVC’s. All of this despite the lock-down and serious downturn in the industry. Keep up the creative standard everyone, your attitude and application to the work is a credit to you.

For me personally, a high point last week in a low point year, was the approach from Sarah Liu, the office and program assistant for Australians in Film (an L.A. -based organisation located at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood) to submit my details and become a member. This will allow me to post blogs on their online portals and access their project pitching facility in Hollywood.

January Film Acting Master Class

The teen-adult film acting master class in January is booking steadily so don’t miss out if you’re keen to participate in a challenging course. You’ll also have a short film performance to shop around if you’re so inclined.

The dates are Tuesday 12 January 7 to 9 pm (pre-production/casting/logistics) and Saturday and Sunday 16 and 17 January 10 am to 6 pm (production)

Class Scene DVDs/USBs

If you would like an edited DVD or USB of your term’s scenes then see me in class and I’ll arrange it for you. The editing fee is $50.00 for USB copies or $55.00 for a DVD (including case and 5 star logo)

Further study of your work at home quickly leads to more confident and truthful performances.

Have a Merry Christmas and a happy and productive 2021. Let’s hope things can only get better next year.

Enjoy the summer semester break with your friends and family and I look forward to working with you again in the new year.

Wooden Acting

When an actor’s performance is described as “wooden,” what does that mean? Basically it means that the performance is forced, in other words, the feelings and emotions are “acted,” not felt. Good acting is living in the moment and truthfully experiencing what the character is feeling emotionally from moment to moment. Wooden acting can be […]

Finding the right acting tutor

The first step in commencing your budding acting career is to find the right acting school and, most importantly, the right acting teacher for you. If you want to learn stage acting then you have a wide choice of institutions. If you want to study screen acting, the choices are limited. But the most critical […]

Truthful Acting

Truthful acting means just that. It means don’t ACT for the camera but instead have an experience! Feel what the character is feeling from moment to moment and immerse yourself fully into the role. The camera is a great bullshit detector and if you’re “acting” then the camera will immediately read the performance as phony […]

Commitment

It’s one thing to apply for a full-time acting course after completing high school when you have plenty of free time and access to resources such as Hex, Austudy or Abstudy. But what if you’re a mature age student? How can you learn how to act while juggling a full-time job and family commitments? If […]

Learning Lines

Whether for stage or screen you must  learn your lines. There is no excuse. As veteran British actor Bill Nighy says: “You must know your lines inside out and back to front.” If you don’t know your lines then you are not connected to either the moment or to the other actor(s). There are numerous techniques […]
