Taking Risks September 2019 Newsletter

Taking risks is important when it comes to your growth as an actor. Risk taking gives everything the actor does a certain edge to it. The actor is anything but predictable and this can add real impact to the performance. Actors who push themselves to the limits of their ability and who are willing to take risks are actors that are well worth watching and working with.

Wise words from master actor and director Robert Redford

Term Dates

Term 3 completes week ending Saturday 21 September.

Term 4 classes commence from Tuesday 8 through to Saturday 12 October.

The Saturday Mixed Ages class returns on 26 October.

Term 3 has been fun and challenging with a noticeable improvement in decision making, collaboration and communication skills across all ages and levels of study.

Well done everyone. Keep up the good work.

Student News

The new ABC-TV comic-drama series Les Norton, starring Alexander Bertrand as Les and featuring one of the school’s alumni Justin Rosniak in the role of Eddie Salita, fixer and right-hand man to underworld racing figure and nightclub owner Price Galese (David Wenham.)

Justin is menacing and funny as Eddie and knowing Justin’s larrikin streak as I do, I’d wager he had a ball filming the role.

Also featured in a recent episode of Les Norton was Rob Flanagan who played the very nasty Colin, the Cockney concreter.

Meanwhile Mark Gadaleta has recently played the role of N.T. Police Commander Bob Fields in Dead Heart.

Taking a break from the camera, graduate student Paul Millett is performing in the David Williamson play Corporate Vibes.

Corporate Vibes is being staged by the Elanora Players and runs from 4 to 12 October. Ticket inquiries 9979 9694.

Class Scenes DVDs/USBs

If you would like an edited copy of this term (or past term’s) scenes, then see me in class or email me and I’ll organise it for you.

Delivery is available on either DVD ($55.00) or USB ($50.00)

If ordering a USB then be aware that the school uses the Premiere Pro editing system on Windows. Not a problem screening the USB at home if you have a Windows computer, but not compatible with the Apple system which works on a different file and playback set up.

Check out this adult class scene from Term 3 – Boobies and Icecream – featuring Lisa Parsons, Simon Busuttil and Tony Dreise.

Have an enjoyable two-week semester break and I look forward to working with you again when classes return from Tuesday 8 October.

Tyre Kickers

Every couple of class terms or so, we run into a time wasting “Tyre Kicker.” Tyre Kickers are the term we use to describe fearful people. The type of person who wants to do something different and exciting but whose fear of failure prevents them from doing anything meaningful. This type of person will book […]

Getting Started

You’ve got an agent now. They like you. You like them. Then you get your first job. It’s an extra bit. Standard issue starting point. You turn up to the set. Don’t be nervous. You’re undergoing training and you were picked to be on-set. Relax. Have a look around. Take it all in. Do what […]

Wooden Acting

When an actor’s performance is described as “wooden,” what does that mean? Basically it means that the performance is forced, in other words, the feelings and emotions are “acted,” not felt. Good acting is living in the moment and truthfully experiencing what the character is feeling emotionally from moment to moment. Wooden acting can be […]

Finding the right acting tutor

The first step in commencing your budding acting career is to find the right acting school and, most importantly, the right acting teacher for you. If you want to learn stage acting then you have a wide choice of institutions. If you want to study screen acting, the choices are limited. But the most critical […]

Truthful Acting

Truthful acting means just that. It means don’t ACT for the camera but instead have an experience! Feel what the character is feeling from moment to moment and immerse yourself fully into the role. The camera is a great bullshit detector and if you’re “acting” then the camera will immediately read the performance as phony […]
