What you Do means more than what you Say August 2019 Newsletter

Action speaks louder than words. True. But why is this important to the actor? Quite simply because what you do is far more revealing than what you say. So don’t get all hung up on the words. Be aware of what your body and your face are doing as our thoughts and feelings are reflected truthfully in our actions.

Tom Hardy not just talking

Tom Hardy not just talking

Good advice from Tom Hardy, a master of physicalisation.

Classes return from Tuesday 16 July through to Saturday 20 July and I’m looking forward to working with our established students again along with the new students commencing classes with us this term. The Saturday Mixed Ages class (which runs in blocks of 8 week terms) returns on 3 August.

We have some interesting, dynamic and creative scene work lined up for the term and I can’t wait to get stuck into it.

SF3 International Film Festival

Entries for this year’s SF3 festival close late August so you’ve got plenty of time to complete your films and submit them to the festival.

There are stacks of cool prizes up for grabs so get going – you could be a winner!

SF3 2019 Judging Panel

SF3 2019 Judging Panel

These are the people you need to impress, the judges and industry professionals working in Australia and Hollywood.

I’ve been involved with SF3 since its inception and I’m thrilled to be judging the films again this year.

Films and TV Series

The Highway Men (USA: 2019)

Promo poster for The Highway Men

This historically accurate film follows two former Texas Rangers Frank Hamer and Maney Gault as they join forces to try and capture notorious outlaws Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker – 1930’s superstars to the poor and downtrodden victims of The Great Depression – as Bonnie and Clyde roam far and wide robbing the despicable and universally loathed banks. Kevin Costner (Hamer) and Woody Harrelson (Gault) turn in excellent performances in a highly watchable film.

Billions (USA: Series 2018 – 2019)

Billions the series

This entertaining and powerful series, set in New York, deals with wealth, influence and corruption and is a real eye-opener when it comes to the finance industry’s incessant greed, ambition and ruthlessness.

Stars the outstanding Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis and the delectable Maggie Siff (Sons of Anarchy)

Class Scene DVDs/USBs

If you would like and edited copy of your past or previous term’s on-camera scenes then let me know and I’ll organize it for you.

DVDs are $55.00 per term’s scenes and USBs are $50.00.

The same prices apply for a compilation of your favourite 5 or 6 scenes from current and previous term’s work.

To wrap up the newsletter, I’d like to say a big Thank You for the birthday wishes from family, friends and students for my milestone 70th birthday. Your thoughts and wishes were greatly appreciated.

With grandson Bowden at my 70th Birthday bash at the studio on 6 July

Me: “70s a breeze kiddo. No sweat.”

Bowden: “Well from my perspective of less than 2 years grandpa, I find the numbers rather daunting!”

Enjoy the rest of the semester break and I look forward to working with you  when classes return from Tuesday 16 July.

Wooden Acting

When an actor’s performance is described as “wooden,” what does that mean? Basically it means that the performance is forced, in other words, the feelings and emotions are “acted,” not felt. Good acting is living in the moment and truthfully experiencing what the character is feeling emotionally from moment to moment. Wooden acting can be […]

Finding the right acting tutor

The first step in commencing your budding acting career is to find the right acting school and, most importantly, the right acting teacher for you. If you want to learn stage acting then you have a wide choice of institutions. If you want to study screen acting, the choices are limited. But the most critical […]

Truthful Acting

Truthful acting means just that. It means don’t ACT for the camera but instead have an experience! Feel what the character is feeling from moment to moment and immerse yourself fully into the role. The camera is a great bullshit detector and if you’re “acting” then the camera will immediately read the performance as phony […]

Commitment

It’s one thing to apply for a full-time acting course after completing high school when you have plenty of free time and access to resources such as Hex, Austudy or Abstudy. But what if you’re a mature age student? How can you learn how to act while juggling a full-time job and family commitments? If […]

Learning Lines

Whether for stage or screen you must  learn your lines. There is no excuse. As veteran British actor Bill Nighy says: “You must know your lines inside out and back to front.” If you don’t know your lines then you are not connected to either the moment or to the other actor(s). There are numerous techniques […]
