Continuity means all things the same and continuous; and a full understanding of the requirements of on-set continuity is vital for all screen actors.

Continuity applies to the emotional content of the performance, the physical component of the performance, eye lines, props, hair, make up and clothing.

Bad continuity is a nightmare when editing scenes and can waste much of the editor’s time and energy. Most continuity people are female – this could be because females in general have a sharper eye for detail. But continuity people are human nonetheless and mistakes happen.

At the Screen Actors Workshop we teach our students to be mindful of their continuity for every different camera set up during the recording of the scene. For example, if you pick up a glass of wine with your right hand on your third line then you must repeat the action during every shot and set up. Actors with good continuity skills are highly regarded on set. That’s why we teach our students to be fully aware of what they are doing in a scene. Not only does this relieve some of the pressure on the continuity person but it demonstrates that the actor has a practical understanding of the required technique.

If it is a hot day and you are wearing a suit and tie and the cast and crew break for lunch halfway through shooting the scene then make sure that your clothing is correctly adjusted before you return to the set. Mistakes with hair and clothing continuity are just as common as mistakes with physical continuity and props.

Obvious continuity mistakes are jarring for the audience and shift their focus away from your performance. Good physical and props continuity allows for tight cutting when assembling scenes and good technical actors impress both the director and the editor. Experienced directors expect you to be fully professional and to have a good working knowledge of your craft. Many actors don’t though – and this makes the good ones stand out even more.

Your aim is to work with the director again and this is very unlikely to happen if you display a poor grasp of essential technique.
