Happy New Year!

And let’s hope 2021 is brighter than last year’s nightmare.

Classes return from Tuesday 2 through to Saturday 6 February and I’m looking forward to working with our established students again and to welcome the new students commencing classes this term.

We have an action packed and creative year of classes and courses planned and we’re looking forward to introducing some new courses and new tutors into the Master Class Program.

We’re also in the process of arranging a series of high profile actors and directors as guest speakers for some special events at the school.

Stay tuned for further details.

January Film Acting Master Class Review

The Film Acting master class was held over the weekend of January 16 and 17 and produced the short film Hideaway. The creative and committed performances of the cast made for a great weekend of recording and I’m now looking forward to hunkering down in the edit suite to complete the film.

Thanks again to my talented cast of students for their commitment to the story and for the creative choices they brought to their roles.

Well done to the cast of Martin Cizek, Michael Haselden, Jessica Shearer, Tom Wright and Charlotte Austin.

Coming up in 2021

First up on the Master Class program this year is the Screen Test/Audition Process with new tutor, actor-producer Charlotte Denton. Charlotte is replacing former Screen Test tutor Sacha Huckstepp who has relocated her casting agency to the Gold Coast.

Charlotte Denton

Auditioning for a role is a completely different beast compared to acting on-set with fellow actors, and if you don’t know the protocol or how to pitch yourself successfully at casting sessions then your acting career will never get off the ground.

For any novice or upcoming actor this course is essential – for the skills gained via the workshop will give you the edge at casting sessions and give you the confidence and the vital skills needed to successfully book roles.

Class Scenes DVD’s/USB’s

If you would like an edited copy of your class scenes from last term (or previous term’s work) then see me in class or email me and I’ll organise it for you. Class scene USB’s are $50.00 per term’s edited scenes (student to supply USB stick) or $55.00 for DVD’s (including DVD and logo case.) Students who further study their work at home have proven to invariably  progress faster with their education.

I’m looking forward to getting back to teaching from 2 February after the Summer semester break. See you then!

Wooden Acting

When an actor’s performance is described as “wooden,” what does that mean? Basically it means that the performance is forced, in other words, the feelings and emotions are “acted,” not felt. Good acting is living in the moment and truthfully experiencing what the character is feeling emotionally from moment to moment. Wooden acting can be […]

Finding the right acting tutor

The first step in commencing your budding acting career is to find the right acting school and, most importantly, the right acting teacher for you. If you want to learn stage acting then you have a wide choice of institutions. If you want to study screen acting, the choices are limited. But the most critical […]

Truthful Acting

Truthful acting means just that. It means don’t ACT for the camera but instead have an experience! Feel what the character is feeling from moment to moment and immerse yourself fully into the role. The camera is a great bullshit detector and if you’re “acting” then the camera will immediately read the performance as phony […]

Commitment

It’s one thing to apply for a full-time acting course after completing high school when you have plenty of free time and access to resources such as Hex, Austudy or Abstudy. But what if you’re a mature age student? How can you learn how to act while juggling a full-time job and family commitments? If […]

Learning Lines

Whether for stage or screen you must  learn your lines. There is no excuse. As veteran British actor Bill Nighy says: “You must know your lines inside out and back to front.” If you don’t know your lines then you are not connected to either the moment or to the other actor(s). There are numerous techniques […]
